1674/12/04 – Father Marquette builds 1 house in what is now Pere Marquette Chicagoknown as was a French Jesuit missionary who founded the first European settlement in Michigan, Sault Ste Marie, and later founded San Ignacio, Michigan. In 1673 Father Marquette and Louis Jolliet were the first Native Americans to see the map and the northern part of Mississippi River

Jacques Marquette was born in Laon, France, June 1, 1637 and joined the Society of Jesus at the age of seventeen. After working and teaching in France for several years, was sent to Quebec in 1666 to preach to the indigenous peoples of the Americas, where he showed great professionalism in local languages, especially Huron. In 1668 Father Marquette (French: Pere Marquette) was transferred by his superiors to missions on the St. Lawrence River in the western Great Lakes. He helped establish a mission at Sault Ste Marie and the Mission of the Holy Spirit in La Pointe, on Lake Superior, near the present city of Ashland, Wisconsin. Here comes in contact with members of the tribes of Illinois, who spoke of the Mississippi River and invited him to teach people who mostly lived farther south. Because of the wars between the Hurons at La Pointe and the people close to Dakota, however, Father Marquette had to relocate to the Straits of Mackinac, informed his superiors of the river and asked permission to explore.
